Current Situation of Pakistan With Out Imran Khan

Pakistan will hold its first general election since the formation of an interim government on February 8, 2022, in a race that will see the parties of two former prime ministers vie for power amid allegations of electoral subversion.

Former Prime Minister Imran Khan, serving a prison sentence for corruption and national security violations, was removed from power in April 2022. His party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) opposes the center-right Pakistan Muslim Party (PML) League. .

The party's leader, Nawaz Sharif, served as prime minister for three terms before being convicted of corruption. Although Khan remains a popular figure in Pakistani politics, his imprisonment prevents him from taking office. Among other setbacks, electoral authorities rejected PTI candidates and senior party officials resigned after their arrests.

Power of Army

The powerful Pakistani army Sharif is widely believed to be backed by Pakistan's powerful military. He lost power in 2017 after a corruption conviction and avoided a 10-year prison sentence by fleeing to London. In recent months, his conviction was overturned and his lifetime ban from politics lifted, allowing him to return and lead the PML into elections. According to Chietigja Bajpaee, senior fellow in Chatham House's Asia-Pacific program, Sharif faces two obstacles to power:

“First, the military, bureaucracy and intelligence services that were responsible for his previous ouster. Sharif is considered a safe figure in the establishment, but the situation could change. Second, win the support of the people despite Imran Khan's continued popularity.
